One Yoga Book Club: Mindful of Race
Join us for three community conversations facilitated by One Yoga teachers and staff about the book Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism from the Inside Out by Ruth King. This book club will meet three times this fall. Each time we meet we will read and discuss a different section of the book:
October 4 - Part 1 - Understanding Habits of Harm
October 25 - Part 2 - Mindfulness: Heart Surgery
November 22 - Part 3 - Cultivating a Culture of Care
"Drawing on her expertise as a meditation teacher and diversity consultant, King helps readers of all backgrounds examine with fresh eyes the complexity of racial identity and the dynamics of oppression. She offers guided instructions on how to work with intense emotions mindfully and shows us how to cultivate a culture of care from a less tangled place to a place of greater clarity and compassion."
This community conversation is part of a concerted effort on the part of One Yoga leadership to dismantle the social and cultural forces that reinforce racial privilege and oppression in our community, in particular in the areas of health equity and yoga. We see this work - showing up to skillfully respond to suffering as it manifests in our day-to-day lives - as an important part of our yoga practice.
Book club meetings are offered in the spirit of dana, or generosity. Donations are welcome and will support Voices for Racial Justice.
